Product Information

p>You will have noticed that there is nearly everything you need on this website to keep out a seaborne invasion such as operation Overlord. However, not everything is as formidable as it seems.  The allies have been busy too!

This model is a conversion kit designed to fit a 28mm tank model, giving it a deflated skirt. Urban Construct also produce a 'swimming' or 'waterline' model of the Sherman swimming Duplex Drive (DD) tank but once they have landed ashore, the screen was deflated and the tank could fight normally. They would continue to drive around with the hull extension, even if the skirt had been removed, until they could get the tank back to a maintenance depot. The resin model fits around a 1/56th scale tank such as Warlord's plastic Sherman medium tank. The overall dimensions are approx 140mm long, 63mm wide and the distance between side skirts (in which a tank must fit) is 48mm wide by 100mm long. Note that the model rests onto the tank mudguards at the front. There is a barrel and tarpaulin detail at the front, which fills the gaps between mudguards. This can be easily modified if desired. The deflated skirt and tank can be purchsed together, giving a discount. See elsewhere on this site.

This model is representative of one of 'Hobart's Funnies', which played a significant part in the conquering of the Atlantic wall on D-Day.

The tank can also fight normally. A must for any assault! Other conversion kits available include a flail Crab tank, bulldozer tank and 'waterline' model of the DD swimming tank also.

'Hobart's Funnies' were developed by Major Hobart for overcoming fortifications such as the Atlantik wall. Hitler's Atlantik wall stretched over 2,000 miles from Norway to Spain and comprised a deadly combination of beach obstacles, hedgehogs, minefields, dragon's teeth, barbed wire, high sea-walls, anti-tank walls, ditches, gun emplacements and tobruks, which appeared to give an impenetrable terrain defence against sea-borne invasion. Be aware that the British developed ingenious ways around or through these defences and when you are representing these operations in your wargames,  you will need to consider how the allies approached the problem.

Figures or tanks in the photos are not included but are for scale purposes only.
